Dr. Halapua want to help ensure country's stability Featured
9 October, 2017. A prominent Tongan academic is returning to politics and contesting next month's election in the hope he can help people better understand the country's transition to democracy.
Sitiveni Halapua was elected an MP in 2010 but chose not to stand in 2014.
He wanted to return this year, standing as an independent for the November 16 elections.
Dr Halapua said it was evident after King Tupou VI dissolved parliament in August that many people didn't understand the changes following the adoption of a more democratic system of government in 2010.
He said he felt this was an area where he can make a contribution.
"Particularly at this election and hopefully that can help ensure the stability of the country which is badly needed for development and uplifting of people's standard of living."
