Tongan government to collect better data on child poverty Featured

19 May, 2016. Anecdotal evidence of increasing poverty in Nuku'alofa suggests more children are vulnerable to sexual assault, the director of Tonga's Women and Children Crisis Centre says.

A doctor is buying breakfast for about 150 school children twice-a-week in Kolomotu'a and more children are appearing on the streets of the capital selling peanuts.

The Centre's director, Ofa Ki-Levuka Guttenbeil-Likiliki, said sexual predators preyed on children in poverty.

"They are more vulnerable and become more susceptible to physical and sexual violence by people who know that this kid is from a poor background, the kid is struggling and if I offer this kid food or money then it will be easy for me to access sexual violation."

Ofa Ki-Levuka Guttenbeil-Likiliki said the Tongan government needs to collect better data on the plight of the nation's poor children.

MRS. LIKILIKI NEEDS TO DO HER OWN SURVEYING...and her own data collection. She receives Government funds to operate her Center. Her organization − although a necessary non-governmental organization (NGO) for the country − we need to be aware of "politically correctness" hysteria created by alarmists and over-zealous "do gooders".
    1) I do sympathize and support her organization's mission to protect women and children from egregious domestic violence, including the plight of young girls and women who are victims of Tongan men sexual predators.
    2) However, creating hysteria by equating "free breakfast" for school children and "kids selling peanuts" on the streets of Nuku'alofa as causes for children sexual molestation is preposterous.
    3) Her good-will efforts in the process, may be telling the world that sexual predators' are tolerated and accepted in Tongan society.
    4) On the contrary, as a deterrence in old Tongan society, the male kins of a female victim of sexual abuse would gang up and beat the crap out of the predator; they may kill him in the process. But we live in a "civilized" world now.
    5) Political correctness can lead us astray from our duty to respect women and children's right to live, and to receive the same opportunities in life as men do: Freedom to choose a productive standard of living, and a happy life style.
