HM commissions the Outer Island Renewable Energy Project Niuatoputapu Solar Hybrid System
28 July, 2023. The Niuatoputapu Solar Hybrid System & Mini Grid as part of the Outer Islands Renewable Energy Project (OIREP) was commissioned by His Majesty, King Tupou VI on the 26th July 2023.
The Niuatoputapu project phase is an estimated USD$6M over the total project cost of USD$28M promoting renewable energy transition and reaching 100% electricity accessibility to the islands of Eua, Ha’apai, Vava’u and now Niuatoputapu.
The OIREP project is the longest standing energy project in Tonga since 2012 and is expected to be completed by the end of the year and it is with the utmost gratitude to acknowledge the unwavering support from the Asian Development Bank and the co-financing partners, Government of Australia, European Union, Global Environment Facility, Second Danish Cooperation Fund For Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency as well as the Government of Tonga.
The joint efforts by the Ministry of Finance as the Executing Agency, Department of Energy (Ministry of MEIDECC) and TPL as the Implementing Agencies and all Contractors and Stakeholders, have made this momentous occasion in Niuatoputapu a reality, providing 100% accessibility of electricity to over 280 households by way of the Solar Hybrid System and bringing Tonga’s total electricity accessibility to around 99%.
