13 February, 2016. A motion of no confidence against Fiji Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama was defeated in Parliament yesterdayFriday 12 February. Fiji's Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama speaking to disciplined forces in January 2016
After a lengthy debate on the motion, which was put forward by opposition MP Semesa Karavaki, the motion was defeated with 28 votes against the motion, 11 votes in favour and 11 abstentions.
The Speaker of the House Dr Jiko Luveni said standing order 49 clause five requires that the debate take precedence over any other business in Parliament, leading to a lengthy debate that took up most of Friday's proceedings in Parliament.
Opposition MP Semesa Karavaki moved the motion of no confidence seconded by opposition whip, Ratu Isoa Tikoca. Members of Government rose to support their Prime Minister, calling the motion ridiculous and a complete waste of time.
Following the debate, Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama said he expected the motion of no confidence filed against him by SODELPA MP Semesa Karavaki would be defeated.
