Prime Minister Attended Sunday Remembrance Featured
Nuku'alofa, 11 November 2015. Every year, Tonga celebrates Remembrance Day, a special day set aside to remember the sacrifices of members of the armed forces and civilians in times of war, specifically since the First World War.
This year’s Memorial Day took place on Sunday 8 November, at the newly relocated cenotaph for the solitary soldier recently constructed at the Mala’e Pangai grounds, near the National Flag post station, facing the Nuku’alofa seaside.
Their Royal Highnesses, the Crown Prince Tupouto’a ‘Ulukalala and Princess Sinaitakala represented His Majesty the King, in honouring the solemn occasion.
The order of procession for the Memorial Service included a two-minute silence, followed by the playing of the Last Post and the first laying of wreath by the Guest of Honour, His Royal Highness Crown Prince Tupouto’a ‘Ulukalala.
The Prime Minister, Hon. Samuela ‘Akilisi Pohiva also paid tribute to the fallen servicemen on behalf of the Government of Tonga, by laying a wreath, at the cenotaph. Wreathes were also laid by members of the Diplomatic Corps, His Majesty’s Armed Forces, New Zealand and Australian Defense Forces as well as representatives of Ex-Servicemen and veterans.
The commemorative service was also attended by Cabinet Ministers, Nobles of the realms, families and friends of ex-servicemen.
