His Majesty King Tupou VI opened the Tongatapu Royal Agriculture Show Featured
Nuku'alofa, 24 August 2015. His Majesty King Tupou VI on Friday afternoon 21 August 2015 opened the Tongatapu Royal Agriculture Show at the ‘Atele Grounds in Ha’ateiho today and thanked all those who had participated in displaying local crops and products.
Accompanied by Her Majesty Queen Nanasipau’u, Crown Prince Tupouto’a Ulukalala, Prime Minister Hon Akilisi Pohiva, Nobles of the Realm and Cabinet Ministers, King Tupou VI then toured the booths displaying local crops, vegestables, fruits, livestock, seafood, handicraft, furniture and other products.
Prime Minister Hon Pohiva had earlier urged the people of Tongatapu to use the soil and work hard in developing farming, fisheries and forestry opportunities to help build a Tonga that will be self-reliant and abundant.
Hon Pohiva said it is time for locals to work hard and use the land wisely, and look at alternatives that would boost their livelihood while also ensuring that Tonga is able to have food security.
Their Majesties and guests were awed by the displays presented during the opening ceremony.
The different districts on Tongatapu came together in displaying their farm produce, sea food and handicraft.
They were joined by local companies and individuals who work with the Ministry of Commerce and Labour under the Buy Tonga Made campaign in displaying local furniture, art and craft and other products.
The Tongatapu Agriculture Show is the last for the year, following earlier shows in Niuatoputapu, Niuafo’ou, Vava’u, Ha’apai and ‘Eua.
Meanwhile, prizes were handed out to farmers, local producers and others who took part in the competition organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFFF).
This year’s Royal Agriculture Show was also organized to honour the Coronation of King Tupou VI and Queen Nanasipau’u.
