Improvements in health disparities between Pacific children and New Zealand children

28 December, 2018. A new report shows improvements in health disparities between Pacific children and New Zealand children as a whole.

The latest figures from the health ministry's 'Ala Mo'ui report will inform a government plan to improve health outcomes for all Pasifika.

The report shows more Pasifika babies are enrolled with a GP at three months of age and have immunisation coverage at eight months of age than the national average.

Pasifika are close to achieving parity with all New Zealanders when it comes to four-year-old kids receiving before school health checks and kids under five enrolled in Community Oral Health Services.

But while figures have improved in a number of areas, Pasifika are still experiencing significantly poorer outcomes in some.

30 percent of Pasifika kids aged between two and 14 are obese compared to 11 percent of New Zealand kids overall.

One cannot but wonder why everyone is scratching there head , figuring out why the disparities between Pacific children and children of. caucasian . We will look at the environment where Pasifika children grow up in compared to the environment where white children grow up in , and one will see a big difference , you decide . The Pasifika diet varies greatly to what a white family eat . Pasifika children have the tendency to eat more junk food and drink sugary drinks in large amount whilst neglecting to visit their GP or dentist till one is sick or has a toothache , another cause for the disparities between Pasifika children and white children health is the lack of a diverse workforce , lack of interpreters , poor access to care , time constraints , and systematic factors that lead to differences in quality of care delivered ( such as difference between public and private hospitals ) . Obesity is rampant among young Pasifika children due to over indulging on junk food and not enough exercise too much time spend in front of the idiot box .
