Ministry of Tourism offers traditional Tongan dance classes Featured
10 August, 2021. Registration for Traditional Tongan Dance lessons commenced yesterday with 62 participants at the Ministry of Tourism office at Neiafu, Vava’u.
This program is hosted by the Ministry’s Culture & Heritage Division who are taking this initiative to the outerislands to highlight our Tongan Culture and provide an opportunity for our youth to learn traditional Tongan dance.
The Director, Mrs. Pulupaki Ika and choreographer/punake Mr. Kotoni Siale are joined by local punake Lee Faleola and Sulia Likiliki in teaching 4 groups of school-aged children to young adults, the art of tau’olunga and faiva faka-Tonga. Lessons will be taught at the Fakamelino Hall and registrations are open until this Friday, 13 August 2021.
A recital of the dances learned by the students will follow at the end of their 7-week lessons.
The Culture & Heritage Division will also host the same program at Ha’apai and ‘Eua.
The schedule for the Traditional Dance program is as follows:
Vava’u: 9 August – 26 September 2021
Ha’apai: 16 August – 1 October 2021
‘Eua: 23 August – 8 October
Class and Age – Groups:
I. Class 1 – Ages 5 – 9
II. Class 2 – Ages 10 – 14
III. Class 3 – Ages 15 and up
IV. Class 4 – All male students
Recital Dates:
Vava’u: 24 September 2021
Ha’apai: 1 October 2021
‘Eua: 8 October 2021.
