National Soroban Competition for the year 2020 a success Featured
9 November, 2020. The National Soroban Competition for the year 2020 was held on Thursday, 5 November at the Kalofiama ‘o Epworth Hall, Nuku’alofa with the best overall award won by the Eastern Tongatapu soroban student.
This Competition was co-organized by the Embassy of Japan and the Ministry of Education and Training, and attend by Hon. Siaosi Sovaleni, Minister for Education and Training and Mr. KAMADA Yasuhiko, Acting Ambassador of Japan .
Present also to witness the competition were Dr. Tangikina Steen, CEO for the Ministry of Education and Training, Mr. MATSUI Nobuaki, JICA’s Resident Representative, soroban education officers, soroban teachers, parents and supporters of soroban competitors.
This year 9 students from Niuatoputapu island jointed the competition for the first time, together with over 120 soroban students from Ha’apai, Vava’u, ‘Eua and the Districts of Tongatapu.
Mr. KAMADA emphasized that through soroban Tonga and Japan share a cultural and educational bond of friendship that held together by commitments to provide children with a good education.
He also reiterated that the soroban not only improves calculation skills but also boost children’s concentration and encourages their confidence.
Hon. Siaosi Sovaleni expressed gratitude to the Government of Japan and the Embassy of Japan in Nuku’alofa for the on-going support to improve mathematical skills of the young students by soroban.
He congratulated the winners and the success of the competition, and the students from Niuatoputapu island who participated this competition for the first time.
The competition tested mathematical ability of students in three category; a written examination, oral examination and flash examination for classes 3, 4 and 5.
Winners of each category for each level were awarded prizes, the competition was held in collaboration of the Embassy of Japan, Ministry of Education and Training, JICA Tonga Office, Japan International Soroban Diffusion Foundation and Tonga Soroban Education Association.
