Australian scholarship intake increases

7 December, 2019. The Australian High Commissioner, Adrian Morrison, held a farewell reception for the successful scholars who will begin travelling next month, to undertake their full time studies.

A total of eighteen applicants have offers to study at postgraduate level in Australia and twenty-five have offers to study undergraduate or postgraduate level at universities in Fiji, Samoa and Vanuatu.

Forty-three Tongan citizens have received Australian scholarship offers to take up university studies starting 2020 in Australia and other institutions in the Pacific. This is an increase from the offers in 2018, which were thirty-seven.

There are two scholarship schemes offered each year for Tongan citizens to apply in February until April.

The Australia Awards Scholarship (AAS) provides successful applicants the opportunity to undertake full time postgraduate study at any Australian institution.

Tongan citizens can also apply for the Australia Awards Pacific Scholarship (AAPS) which offers full time undergraduate or postgraduate studies at selected institutions within the Pacific region.

Australia Awards are long-term awards administered by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

The scholarships aim to contribute to the development needs of Australia’s partner countries in line with bilateral and regional agreements.

The scholarships are a platform to help develop the skills and knowledge of scholarship recipients to drive change and contribute to development of Tonga.

Australia is committed to its step-up in Tonga and our common values.
