Nuku'alofa, 1March 2016.  More than 30 participants from Government Ministries and Information Technology businesses are participating in a week-long workshop here in Nuku’alofa.

Participants will get to learn about the Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) and National Security. Local communication company Tonga Communications Corporation is hosting the workshop at the Fa’onelua Convention Centre.

The training aims to help participants understand the structures, processes, procedures, and policies involved in requesting, allocating and managing Internet Protocol Version 4 (IPv4) and IPv6 Internet addresses besides Autonomous System.

TCC’s Manager Engineering Sione Veikoso said the training will help participants from different stakeholders understand IPv6 better.

“IPv4 was what the world used in the past few years but now it is obsolete and many countries are shifting to IPv6 so that was the reason why we tried to make this training possible to ensure that the IT sectors will have a fair internet protocol version,” Mr Veikoso said.

Mr Veikoso said that IPv6, also known as the Internet Protocol next generation (IPng), is the latest version of the Internet Protocol (IP). It replaces the current version - IPv4.

Mr Veikoso said the Tongan government will benefit from this workshop as participants will learn more about the new IP and how to protect the country’s internet, particularly networks and firewalls.

The training is hosted by TCC in collaboration with the Pacific Island Telecommunication Association (PITA) and Asia Pacific Network Information Centre (APNIC).
