Training on Mosikaka Weaving Technique in Ha'apai Featured

Nuku'alofa, 26 August 2015. Training on mosikaka weaving is underway in the Islands of Ha'apai. The training is funded by the the South Pacific Tourism Organization in association with Tonga Handicrafts and Cultural Tourism Support Programme (THCTSP). Weavers from the islands of Ha'apai are learning a traditional weaving technique unique to the country, with the hope it will help them earn a better living.
Lesieli Tupou an expert on mosikaka weaving is the trainer assisted by Tisiola Muli of Ha'ano. Mrs. Tupou has conducted many trainings on this particluar traditional weaving technique in past. In a recent interview with Mrs. Tupou she stressed that innovation and quality management also go hand in hand with the mosikaka weaving training sessions. Women are encouraged to design their own style and patterns for their mosikaka items they produce. The training according to Mrs. Tupou started with mosikaka weaving using the pandanus and the second phase is the use of the coconut fibers.
Monalisa Palu the coordinator of Handicrafts and Cultural Tourism Support Programme, says that here are 16 participants with officials from SPTO and TV Fiji who already in Ha'apai to document the training. The training commenced on Monday 24th and it will be completed on Friday 28th August with the presentation of certificates.
The mosikaka technique is used to make special baskets for the royal family. Nowadays, there are variety of items using the mosikaka weaving techniques, such as hats, fans, bookmarks, serviette rings, bracelets, ear-rings, small trays, purse, mobile-phone bags, head-gear for dancing, baskets and many more.
The South Pacific Tourism Organisation says the aims is to empower the women of Ha'apai, whose people are still recovering from the effects of Cyclone Ian.The training will not only develop the skills of women in Ha'apai on this unique technique of weaving but it will help to add value to Tongan handicraft.
The economic impact is understandable and the weaving technique is another unique selling point for Tonga as a tourist destination.
