Let me make myself clear from the outset, that art and science are merely "human ways of seeing the world,” this applies to mathematical equations, kupesi (or geometric designs), language and many others.
My relatively minor knowledge and understanding of science is this: a. 1/2 PLUS (TAANAKI) 1/2 = 1; b. 1 PLUS (TAANAKI) 1 = 2; c. 1 MULTIPLIED BY (LIUNGA) 1 = 1; and d. 1 DIVIDED BY (VAHEVAHE)1 = 1
As we are all well aware, science as a discipline, is one of the many ways humans have discovered as a tool of seeing reality. A greek way of looking at reality introduced to the world in the past centuries. Numerous times we have mistaken science to be reality itself.
The examples I have outlined above may help us, which is extrapolated as follows: a. 1/2 as a quantity PLUS 1/2 as a quantity is equal to 1 as an entity; b. 1 as an entity PLUS 1 as an entity is equal to 2 as an entity. If we take this to be true then, 1/2 as an entity PLUS 1/2 as an entity must be equal to 2 as an entity.
To further the discussion, let me put it differently thus: 1/2 a litre of water PLUS 1/4 a litre of water PLUS a 1/4 a litre of water = 1 litre of water; 1/2 a litre of water PLUS 1/4 a cubic meter of cement PLUS 1/4 cubic meter of sand = 1 mix of 1 lot OR 1 entity called concrete.
To be absolutely sure, it can be argued that : 1 PLUS 1 should NOT be equal to 2. Instead 1 PLUS 1 should be equal to 1 in a spatial relationship within and between ANOTHER or OTHER 1. 2 as we know is a name given to the result of this transaction. Complex chemistry, physics and mathematical equations are mere complex relationships between 1 and itself or 1 and any OTHER 1s .
Similarly, cell division (or proliferation) in biology is mathematically represented in an exponential curve formation. As a natural process, cell division can also be represented in other forms, such as the kupesi manulua (lets say it is art here). Both are pointers to one and the same reality.
To take this matter even further, I argue that cell splitting for procreation outlines a more complex relationship. Sione (man) PLUS Mele (woman) = `Ana (child) . This is some of the complexities that create the confused division between art and science. To be absolute, Sione PLUS Mele should be equal to 'Ana, i.e., Sione PLUS Mele PLUS `Ana. For the sake of the argument, when Sione and Mele die, `Ana will continue to live over time and space. As a scientific process we can dig even deeper into the splitting of DNA into halves in both man and woman and the unification of these halves to make one.
To be positively certain, as far as the above transformation as a natural process goes: 1 PLUS 1 = 3 (1 + 1 + 1) and over time back to 1.
Without having to go further into reality, it is suffice to say that all of these can ultimately be a mathematical formulation of 1 in science or arrangements of mata (or eye) in Art, we can conclude that science uses, say, a red lens, and art uses. for example, a blue lens, both as different ways, tools or means of seeing or understanding reality.
The shortfall I see here is not reality, nor science, nor art, but rather how we see or understand reality.
