Climate crisis in the Pacific, "just another issue" for the big emitters Featured

Kosi Latu Director-General of SPREP Kosi Latu Director-General of SPREP

1 October 2019. The Director-General of SPREP, the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme, says he's disappointed by the outcome of the UN Climate Summit in New York, and the sideline meetings that followed.

Kosi Latu says "the moment" to commit to doing more to tackle climate change was lost.

"For us, it's a crisis now, it's not just an issue, it's a serious crisis, and sadly the big emitters don't talk about it as a crisis," he said.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Prime Minister of Cook Islands, Mark Brown, is calling for a complete overhaul of climate resilience funding, so that countries most at risk from climate change aren't made to suffer anymore.

In particular, he's calling for interest-free loans to be made available to small island states with a payback period of up to 100 years.
