13 February 2020. The Public Service Commission is pleased to announce the appointments of Mr. Simione Sefanaia of Kolofoóu, Tongatapu as Part Time Chairman and Dr Taniela Fusimalohi of Óhonua, Éua as Part Time Commissioner of the Public Service Commission with effect from 10 February, 2020 for a period of three (3) years.

Mr Sefanaia holds a Bachelor of Science from the University of the South Pacific, Fiji and a Master’s Degree in Agricultural Development Economics from Australia National University, Australia.

Mr Sefanaia’s career in the public service began in 1973 when he was appointed as a Cadet Agricultural Officer for the then Ministry of Agriculture. He was further promoted in the same Ministry to the position of Agricultural Officer (1975) and Senior Agricultural Officer (1983).

In 1988 Mr Sefanaia resigned from the Public Service. In 1989 he commenced employment at the Tonga Development Bank. He was promoted to various positions within the Tonga Development Bank and was appointed Managing Director in 2006 until 2013.

In November, 2010, he was appointed as a Commissioner for the Public Service Commission and was again re-appointed as Deputy Chairman with effect from 12 January, 2016 for a period of four (4) years.

Dr Fusimalohi holds a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Queensland, Australia, a Master of Arts from the University of South Australia, a Postgraduate Diploma from the University of Manchester, United Kingdom and a Bachelor of Business from the University of South Australia, Australia.

Dr Fusimalohi’s career in the public service began in 1987 when he was appointed as a Senior Executive Officer for the Prime Minister’s Office. He was further promoted in the same Office to the position of Assistant Secretary (1988) and Principal Assistant Secretary (1997). On 22 August, 2000 he was promoted to the position of Deputy Director for the then Tonga Visitors Bureau and was again appointed as Chief Executive Officer for the then Ministry of Training, Employment, Youth and Sports on 01 January, 2007 until 01 January, 2012.

Dr Fusimalohi has sat on various professional committees namely the Policy Review Committee and the Performance Management System Committee which were both set up by the Public Service Commission.

The Acting Chairman of the Commission, Mr Sinilau Kolokihakaufisi together with fellow Commissioners; Mr Sione Fanua Posesi Bloomfield and Mr. Tu’itahi welcomes Mr Sefanaia as Part Time Chairman and Dr Taniela Fusimalohi as Part Time Commissioner and wishes them success in their term in Office.
