US withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement will undermine its influence in the Pacific Featured

President of the United States Donald Trump and The Prime Minister of Tuvalu, Kausea Natano Chairman of Pacific Islands Forum President of the United States Donald Trump and The Prime Minister of Tuvalu, Kausea Natano Chairman of Pacific Islands Forum

7 November 2019. The US withdrawal from the Paris climate agreement will undermine its influence and credibility in the Pacific, the Pacific Islands Forum chair says.

"As of today, the United States will cease all implementation of the non-binding Paris accord and the draconian financial and economic burdens the agreement imposes on our country," Trump said.

Tuvalu Prime Minister and Forum chair, Kausea Natano, said America used to play a leadership role in supporting multi-lateralism and promoting a global rules-based system.

Mr Natano said it was "disappointing" to see that ethos fade and falter when the world needed it most.

As per the Forum's Kainaki II Declaration, the shared prosperity of the Blue Pacific continent could only safely exist if the international community pursued efforts to limit warming to 1.5°celsius, as set out in the Paris Agreement, he said.

The science was non-negotiable, he said.

Tuvalu was in the frontline of the climate fight, and as a country it had contributed the least to global emissions, but it was still doing its part to implement the Paris agreement and reduce reliance on fossil fuels.

He urged those countries involved to listen to the voice of the Blue Pacific, respect its collective will and support its stewardship of the great Oceanic continent.

America does not care which I agree with . We both counting on you to be smart and live within your means. In order words, do not get the loan if you can't pay it back. If you can't pay it back and China ended up owning you, whose problem is that? America? I am a little bit tired of Tongans running around and telling the world they are the most educated people among the Pacific Islanders. Humm, if that is true then why 22% of the country are living underneath the national poverty threshold? How come the economic growth rate is walking like drunk sailors? Is that also the fault of America? Your government is not helping either. Stop blaming others for you misfortunes.

Hogwash!. Paris Accord was a farce and an attempt by the European Union to cowed the United States to pay the cost of climate change/global warming while China and India are entirely free of any responsibility. They are the biggest polluters in the world. Pres. Trump does not believe climate change is real, as well as the majority of American people, and so were the Aussies. Look, I understand the reason why Tonga is participating, and that's okay too. If supporting climate change narrative gets us millions of pa'anga in the process, why not. But all you've got to do is look around the Kingdom. Has any of the tradition sites gone underwater? According to climate change crowds, some of the historical beachfront sites should be six feet under the ocean. The Capt Cook landing site is still there, not a centimeter higher than when he landed at Mu'a in 1777. I'll say, take the money but not the lies behind the global warming hoax.
