Local artists showcased their best work at True Tonga Incorporated’s (TT Inc.)

Nuku'alofa, 20 January 2016. Local artists showcased some of their best work at True Tonga Incorporated’s (TT Inc.) space at the Small Industries Centre for HRH Princess Sinaitakala Tuku’aho and invited guests at a humble yet intimate event.

“I am so honoured by this opportunity and am glad I could present a little bag I had made around the time of the Coronation  using the mosikaka weaving technique to Her Royal Highness,” beamed Lesieli Tupou who has trained women not only on Tongatapu but in the outer islands as well.

The arts showcase aimed to highlight some of the wonderful and high quality items available and to bring more awareness to work that sustains families.

“When we talk of sustainable development, employment opportunities, economic empowerment and livelihoods, we must not ignore the vital role of handicrafts as it pays for school fees, puts food on tables, pays bills and provides for daily needs. The truly committed ones can excel and life is hard but we must do what we can and just organising such an opportunity for their works to be displayed and sold is a step forward. These guests go home with an item or two to treasure and at the same time, they are empowering our people and encouraging them,” said a member of TT Inc.

The programme showcased artists who had authentic high quality products with hopes of similar regular events.

“We are humbled with this beginning as it is an opportunity to continue coordination work initiated over the past few years with key stakeholders including trainers and beneficiaries and now, we are incorporating lessons learnt and expanding this so it is about empowerment and economic empowerment is not limited only to handicrafts,” says the Managing Director.

True Tonga Inc. aims to promote economic empowerment, cultural preservation and sustainable livelihoods.

“I watched guests and their interest and was overwhelmed when the Manager of Malau Accommodation bought my fan. It was nice to think that these businesses are supporting us. I am grateful,” said Tangiloto Po’oi.
