Disaster Preparedness Training in Vava'u Featured

Nuku'alofa, 9 March 2016. Tonga Red Cross Society in their capacity building trains more community facilitators to assist disaster preparedness during cyclone season

. Disaster Management Program increases numbers of disaster management trainers opens a week long training in Neiafu for 16 new facilitators including participants from ‘Eua, Tongatapu, Ha’apai and Vava’u in Neiafu, Vava’u this week.

Magistrate Judge and Government Representatives Mr. Paula Tatafu officially open the week long training at the Tonga Red Cross Vava’u Branch Conference Room on Monday 29th February 2016. Among the guests were town officers and District Officers of Vava’u Group and stakeholders partners.

Facilitation skills, disaster cycle, Assessments and relief distribution were among core focus of the training. Preparedness phase and disaster risk reduction in our community should be prioritized throughout during cyclone season.

Mr. Sione Taumoefolau, Secretary General of Tong Red Cross elaborates auxiliary roles of national society in Disaster. “Tonga Red Cross in its capacity and auxiliary role to government, helps and alleviate suffering of people in many disaster response, equipping trainers with essential skills will help to minimize sufferings.

Mr Paula Tatafu, appreciate the work of Tonga Red Cross in various disaster response including Zika response is currently on the way. “Opportunity to teach people in risk reduction minimize the effects and impacts disasters such as Cyclone Ula, with all our support we will make a better Tonga to face any situation of disaster” He says.

Training was facilitated by Disaster Management Officer, Mr. Inoke Taufa and assisted by Ms. Petra Mackay of Australian Red Cross.

Tonga Red Cross continues to appreciate the valuable assistance of the Government of Australia through their Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Training will be completed this Friday 04th March and participants will return back to their respective branch to implement activities to their communities.
