29 Septmeber, 2016. The Prime Minister, the Honourable Samuela ‘Akilisi Pohiva delivered Tonga’s statement under the theme "The Sustainable Development Goals: a universal push to transform our world" at the 71st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 71) on 24th September 2016.

In statement, the Prime Minister supported that all countries must work together at the national, regional and international levels to successfully implement the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Agenda and achieve our targeted goals.

Although the SDGs were only adopted by the United Nations in September 2015 they were incorporated into the government’s development framework and are an integral part of the government’s corporate planning and budgeting process.

His Honor spoke on Tonga’s national priorities: health and Non Communicable Deceases (NCDs), transnational crime and drug trafficking, climate change and the sustainable use of marine resources.

The Prime Minister reiterated the call for a Special Representative on Climate and Security and spoke of disarmament as the only way to maintain and determine international peace and security.

The statement closed by calling for an open and constructive dialogue with Indonesia regarding the status and welfare of the people of West Papua.
