10 August, 2016. The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of MEIDECC Hon. Siaosi Sovaleni officially opened Tonga Promotional Outreach Program at USP Tonga Campus, ‘Atele yesterday morning.

The four-day outreach program was hosted by the Faculty of Science, Technology and Environment.

In his opening address, the Deputy Prime Minister Hon. Sovaleni said the increasing numbers of students at USP Tonga Campus revealed the greater interest in science education.

“Increase in student numbers at Tonga Campus itself is an indication of greater interest in science education and to promote sustainable education growth in our Science Education. USP is planning to bring the courses to your doorstep,” he said.

Hon Sovaleni stated that the initiative would provide students with the opportunity to complete their programme on face-to-face (F2F) teaching mode.

“This is a great opportunity where students would complete this programme on face-to- face teaching mode without even having to leave the comfort and protection of their homes and families.”

“The proposed programmes will not only offer opportunities to upgrade the qualifications of our people but it shall also draw attention to another critical need. The need to upgrade science labs across Schools in Tonga as this is where our young scientists’ interests is aroused.”

Hon. Sovaleni also stressed the significance of science education as a way to drive Tonga forward.

“The small Pacific Island countries cannot ignore or shy away from science education because science education can be used as a vehicle to drive us forward and make our nation recognized in the competitive global international markets.”

The outreach programme aimed to promote and create awareness of the proposal to offer science programmes face-to-face at USP Tonga Campus starting next year.

Proposed Science Programmes included Bachelor of Science in Biology/Chemistry, Marine Science, and Environmental Science with Biology emphasis, Bachelor of Science in Computer Science & Information Systems, Bachelor of Science in Science Teachers Accelerated Programme (STAP with Biology & Chemistry majors) and Postgraduate Diploma in Mathematics & Chemistry.
