Tonga's PSA rejects new proposed salaries

Nuku'alofa, 1 April 2016. Tonga's Public Service Association has rejected proposed new salary structures due to what it calls unfair distribution of remunerations and benefits.

The PSA said its concerns had resulted from a lack of consultations with employees and not undertaking a holistic review for all public employees.

The PSA said in 2005 a resolution was signed to resolve major strike action, in the belief that a review of salaries would be carried out after two years.

It said it took the government 10 years to honour the agreement.

The PSA said the new salary structure is unfair because some positions with no academic qualifications and minimal responsibilities get higher salaries than those of university graduates.

The PSA asked the Public Service Commission to redo the review by July 2017.

It also recommended the PSC conduct training of the HR Officers in all the Ministries on how to implement the new management system properly.
