“ If children of Pacific island parents born overseas were brought up according to the , custom ,culture, and language of the mother land they would not be suffering from depression and anxiety as they do . It's the parents fault for not speaking the mother tongue to their children , why ? that's a conundrum that Pacific islanders have to solve for themselves . Most parents will not speak the mother tongue to their children because they practice their English on the children so the children grow up speaking English and not able to speak a word of the mother tongue . The problem these children face my seem trivial but to the individual child it's a big deal . they feel lost isolated for lack of knowing their heritage , their culture ,their language . On the other hand they speak English , they may aquire degrees they may become rich but they will not be accepted on equal terms within white society , so they feel estranged from their own and not really comfortable in white society . the result is a feeling of not belonging and depression and anxiety sets in and who is to blame ? the parents no one else .this way of thinking is prevalent in Pacific island society . With other cultures everybody in the family speak their mother tongue at home always because they will speak English at school , at work . Therefore these children feel comfortable with their own and also more confident with themselves too . That's why grown ups go overseas don't suffer depression because they speak the mother tongue already and because English is a second language back home it's not a problem .Most important that parents speak the native tongue to their children at home because they live in an English speaking environment they will speak English regardless . ”
