OK Obama, you pull out from the Pacific and Russia and China move in. We saw on the news a big shipment of Russian weapons to Fiji and the plan by the Fiji government to bring in Russian military advisors to train Fijian soldiers in the use of those weapons. At the same time China is creeping in slowly in other areas. Now by withdrawing from the fisheries treaty the US is opening up yet another avenue for the communist to fill. Russia has been trying for a long time to gain a foothold in the Pacific without success because Uncle Sam and big brothers Australia and NZ were guarding the Pacific like a hawk protecting its chicks. This big military presence in Fiji and the possible "assistance" to Pacific fisheries to fill the gap left by the Americans are challenges, maybe threats, to western democracy and should be treated seriously. It would be very interesting to see the next moves from the Alliance, as I have a feeling that the current leadership in most if not all Pacific countries including Tonga. have a tendency to welcome the communists with open arms, particularly when nice juicy communist carrots are tangling on our shores. With the kind of political climate in Tonga at the moment it would come as no surprise if Akilisi joins Bainimarama in providing the much needed foothold in the Pacific that has eluded the Russians in the past many decades. Part of the communists plan to enter the Pacific came in the form of scholarships for Pacific students to study medicine in Cuba. Beijing is now becoming a regular education destination for Pacific islands. Next stop? Moscow !!!! It's a pity that the US and her alliance have lost interest in the Pacific, leaving the poor island nations to prostitute themselves to overheated sugar daddies from the former iron curtain harems.
Now, where will this new government of 'Akilsi take us?
