21 December, 2015. Jonah Lomu's wife Nadene has spoken out to thank New Zealanders for their support. "Thank you to New Zealand and the world for the support and love you have shown both my sons Brayley and Dhyreille on the passing of their Daddy.

"While this is a hard time for us, I am grateful for the support from all of you that have over the last week spared a thought for our family." The family face their first Christmas without Lomu - who is lovingly referred to as "daddy" by his sons. Lomu died in November after a long battle with kidney problems.

The Jonah Lomu Legacy Trust was set up by the NZ Rugby Players Association to support the boys. Critics of the fundraising initiative said there were children living in poverty who had far more need of help.

Broadcaster Hilary Barry also questioned whether Lomu's financial situation should be made public. Nadene, who had no involvement in setting up the trust, said she was grateful her sons would have support growing up without their father in their lives.

"On behalf of our sons I am very grateful that people who have been touched through Jonah's life have wanted to give so generously to the trust that has been established for Brayley and Dhyreille.

"I will continue to work hard, as every other good mother in this country does, to provide them with the best upbringing possible." Nadene said she was not ready to say more while she came to terms with the loss of her husband.

The family would speak again in the New Year. In the meantime, the family wanted time and privacy to focus on Lomu's sons getting through Christmas without their hero and daddy.

"Once again thank you so much for your love and support, have a safe and happy Christmas with your family these holidays and enjoy every moment you can with your loved ones, you never know how long you have them with you," Nadene said.
