12 February, 2017. The government of Papua New Guinea remains committed to honouring its decision to provide support to the country of Tonga, in their preparations to hosting the 2019 Pacific Games.

In a media conference today, Tkatchenko stated that Prime Minister Peter O’Neil as well as the National Executive Council have been presented with an overall costing of expenses for the Pacific’s largest sporting event.

With an estimated K49 million set aside for this purpose, the Minister for Sport, Justin Tkatchenko, has said that, with the PNG economy in a downturn, and with the elections on the horizon, the commitment at the moment was domestic, but that they would still offer assistance to the Pacific Island nation.

With the current economic climate that Papua New Guinea is facing, the minister was also quick to point out, that the priority for spending, would still be within the country, but that human resource would also be part of the assistance to Tonga, after the successful hosting of Port Moresby 2015.
