Pacific Games Council hopeful Tonga can put preparations for 2019 before politics

11 May, 2016. The Pacific Games Council begins a two day meeting in Vanuatu yesterday 10 May 2016, at the end of the which a decision will be made on which country will have hosting rights for the 2023 Pacific Games, Solomon Islands or French Polynesia.

The meeting will also be focussing on Australia and New Zealand's future involvement, after they took part in the Games for the first time last year when they sent teams to Port Moresby.

But the most pressing concern is likely to be the preparations for the 2019 Games, with Tonga apparently warned that it could be stripped of hosting rights if Lord Sevele is removed as chairman of the organising committee without the consent of the Games Council.

Executive director Andrew Minogue says the Council's general assembly in Port Vila will be updated on the progress of Tonga's preparations and he's hopeful on-going political problems can be resolved.
