Nuku'alofa, 3 August 2015. The Archbishop of York is a senior bishop in the Church of England, and is second only to theArchbishop of Canterbury.

He is the Diocesan Bishop of the Diocese of York and the metropolitan bishop of the Province of York. The Archbishop of York is a member of the House of Lords and is Primate of England.

He is considered by the 80 million members of the Anglican community in the world as the silent leader of the Church and is the equal of the Archbishop of Canterbury.

His Grace is originally from Uganda and was educated at Cambridge University and was an advocate of the Supreme Court of Uganda. Speaking out against the regime of President Idi Amin, His Grace moved to the United Kingdom in 1974.

Here, His Grace devoted himself to Anglicanism, beginning his study of theology at Selwyn College, Cambridge in 1976 and eventually gaining a doctorate in 1984.

He studied for ordination at Ridley Hall, Cambridge, and was ordained in 1979. In 1996 he was consecrated as the area Bishop of Stepney and in 2002 moved to the position of Bishopof Birmingham.

In 2005 he was appointed to the position of Archbishop of York. His Grace is a traditionalist within the Anglican Church, generally supporting socially conservative moral positions, publicly criticising multiculturalism and homosexual behaviour.

While in Tonga His Grace officiated at the ordination of new priests of the Anglican Churchof Tonga on Sunday 2nd August at St. Paul’s Eucharist. The ordained priests were Fr. LaiseniLiava’a and Fr. Steven Vaka.

Today, Monday 3rd August, His Grace will join with the Acting Prime Minister, Hon. Siaosi Sovaleni who is also Minister responsible for the Environment and Climate Change, in a dedication service this morning on Pangaimotu Island, to mark thepromotion of public awareness on the environment and climate change.

His Grace will  with Church Leaders for lunch this afternoon and with the Anglican community before his departure tomorrow Tuesday, 4 th August.
