Tonga Parliament Workshop on UN Convention Against Corruption Featured
Nuku'alofa, 20 May, 2015. To ensure accountability, transparency and good governance for Tongan members of Parliament, a two day workshop to advance and build Tongan Parliamentarians capacity to practice anti-corruption was successfully completed last week in the capital Nuku'alofa.
Lawmakers were urged by the Speaker of the house, Lord Tuivakano in his opening remarks at Loumaile Lodge to recognize the importance of combating corruptions.
The workshop on corruption and the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) was to inform members of Tonga’s Parliament on requirements and good practices of anti-corruption implementation to strengthen further consideration of anti-corruptions reform in Tonga to be consistent with UNCAC.
The Prime Minister, Hon, Samuela ‘Akilisi Pohiva also did a presentation which included his political journey over the past three decades and the growth of the pro-democracy movement, culminating in the 2009 reform, which led to a more democratic system at the 2010 Parliamentary election.
The workshop was also an advance to build Tongan Parliamentarians capacity to foster good governance and strengthen anti-corruption effort.
