His Majesty's King Tupou VI commenced Tonga Retirement Fund Board Building

Nuku'alofa, 15 February 2016. His Majesty King Tupou VI officially opened the New Retirement Fund Board Building at Railway Road in Kolofo’ou on Friday last week, February 13.

The building covers an area of 1,731 square meters and has three floors. The building’s construction started in 2014 and was completed on February 4 this year, at a total cost of $8.1 Million Pa’anga. It will house the Fund’s administration.

The Prime Minister and Chairman of the Board, Hon. ‘Akilisi Pohiva said that the opening of the building should act as a light to guide civil servants of Tonga. Chief Executive Officer Mr. Saia Havili presented the Project Summary Address.

He said that the Tonga Retirement Fund Board was established by the late King Taufa’ahau Tupou IV on July 1, 1999 to assist the people of Tonga.

The RFB provides benefits such as retirement payment, death in service payment, redundancy and injury/permanent disablement to its members.

He said that the Board started out with 4,241 members and a total of $32.37 million Pa’anga That has grown to the current membership of 4,864 members and a total income of $132.89 million Pa’anga.

“We have paid out $60 million Pa’anga to 3,500 members,” he added. He said the Board has worked over time with the aim set up by the late King Taufa’ahau Tupou IV which was initiated to improve the standard of living and give members a chance to save their money without tax being included.

Mr Havili also announced that His Majesty’s Armed Forces has become a member of the Board. “In July, 2013 His Majesty’s Armed Forces has become a full-time member of the Board,” Mr Havili added.

The construction was carried out by the China Civil Engineering (CCEC),w ho worked with some local sub-contractors. His Majesty King Tupo VI was accompanied by Her Majesty Queen Nanasipau’u in inspecting the building.

Also present at the occasion were Members of Parliament, the President of the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga, the Rev Dr. ‘Ahio, and Lord Matoto ‘o Tu’anekivale plus government officials and invited guests.

A Heilala tree was also planted by His Majesty, King Tupou VI to commemorate the occasion.
