China Aid Solar Power Street Lamp Lights On Isolated Islands Featured

Nomuka, 17 December 2015. HRH Crown Prince Tupouto’a ‘Ulukalala commissioned the solar power street lights in the island of Nomuka in Ha’apai.

HRH Crown Princess Sinaitakala, H.E. Huang Huaguang, Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China in Tonga, Mr. Veivosa Taka, Member of Parliament for Ha’apai 13 and people from Nomuka community joined the celebration.

The solar power street lights is part of the China aid material for Tonga to address climate change. The 1500 lights arrived Tonga early this month and will be distributed by MEIDECC to isolated islands like Nomuka. The rest of installations will be carried out next year.

In his remarks, H.E. Ambassador Huang said the new street lights will be energy saving for remote islands like Nomuka and provide security and convenience for people’s daily life.

On 9-10 December, China also sent a team of experts from the manufacturer of the street lights and worked together with Tonga MEIDECC to provide training to local technicians about the installation and maintenance of the lights.
