Tonga Moving Forward in Promoting Cyber Safety

8 September, 2015. “To promote a safer and Healthier Digital World of the Children of Tonga,” is the theme used to commemorate this week followed a training at the National Cultural Centre conducted to scrutinise the existing factors and the rapid-growth of accessing the internet in Tonga.

Cyber Safety has become an important priority in tackling the issues of cybercrimes.

The Minister of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Mr. Fe’ao Vakata opened the ceremony this morning, 07th September 2015 and says, “The internet and technology are there itself but we have to learn the ways of how to tackle the bad influences of using it.”

He also thanked the two internet and mobile providers in Tonga, TCC and Digicel for providing Tonga a more faster, reliable and affordable internet and ensure that it is important for us to handle the cons of using it for the benefits of our children.

The workshop is led by the Ministry of Internal Affairs in its Church Leader’s Forum through the National Cyber Challenge Task Force. It includes youth groups, key stakeholders as they discuss issues of cyber-bullying in the broader context of cyber safety to secure the children of Tonga from the emerging challenges of using mobile phones and internet.

As the chairperson of the Cyber Safety Committee, Mr. Siosaia Vaipuna says, “It is vital that we all work together and do our part to provide Tonga with a safer and secure online experience. We must learn to tackle issues such as cyber-bullying as we are most vulnerable to face these problems, particularly youths and children as it can lead to suicidal related concerns.”

Daily Discussions and Topics being discussed within the week and the starting point was: Social Media – “You Are What You Share” and was presented by the Director of the Information Department, Ministry of MEIDECC, Mr. Andrew To’imoana and he shares the reality of using different types of social media and the many ways of how the human race takes up most of their times on Facebook, twitter or whatever means they’re using.

The highlighted themes to follow will be: Digital Technology-“Be Smart About it”, Internet-“Stop! Think! Then Connect, Cyber Bullying and Suicidal Related-“Stop It”, Young People-“Change to the Safer and Healthier Digital World”.

This is the 2nd round of hosting such workshop and the participants are to find and plan a more secure and safer ways to promote the importance and the impacts of technology nowadays. From there, they are to share it among their communities for the benefit of Tonga.

The workshop is facilitated by Rev. Filifai’esea Lilo, Secretary of the National Forum of Church Leaders and Child Protection, Ministry of Internal Affairs with the help of UNICEF.
