PITA 19th AGM and Trade Show Launched in Nuku’alofa

The Pacific Island Telecommunications Association (PITA) 19th General Meeting and Trade show was officially launched this afternoon at the Fa’onelua Convention Center. Participants from member countries across the Pacific together with service and equipment vendors globally are here in Tonga for the event.

The AGM and Trade Show runs for 5 days from today April 20th to 24th 2015. This is an annual event and this is the first time in the Kingdom of Tonga. The event is hosted by Tonga Communications Corporation (TCC) in cooperation with the Ministry of Meteorology, Energy, Information, Disaster Management, Environment, Climate Change and Communications (MEIDECC).

Dr. ‘Ahio the President of the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga delivered the opening prayer before the welcome remarks by Mr. Jurangpathy CEO, Tonga Communications Corporation. The keynote address and the official launched of the event conducted by the Acting Prime Minister Hon. Siaosi Sovaleni and Minister responsible for MEIDECC. The Chairperson of TCC Board of Directors Miss. Aloma Johansson delivered the vote of thanks.

There are approximately over 200 telecommunication specialists, experts and businesses from around the world are here in the kingdom to take part in the program. The participants come from a multitude of fields and from operators and vendors.  The conference has invariably been a source of the latest findings in the field of telecommunication according to a official from MEIDECC.

“This AGM, aside from providing a way to exchange new hard-won knowledge and experiences, develop new ideas and overcome challenges in the way of creating new value, also provides a wealth of opportunities – including those which can improve business, such as marketing, meeting potential business partners, generating new ideas and gathering knowledge valuable in our current and future endeavors” stated the government official media release.

The Acting Prime Minister Hon. Sovaleni in his keynote address emphasized the importance to further close cooperation among member countries and the opportunity for Tonga to host this important meeting is part of the nation's drive to boost economic development. The theme of the meeting is “Developing Smart Islands”.
