2 March, 2017. The Grant Contract formalizing the Government of Japan’s assistance to three Grassroots Human Security Projects in the Kingdom of Tonga were signed between H.E Mr. Yukio Numata,Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan in Tonga, and representatives of respective recipient committees on Monday 27 February 2017, at the Conference Room of the Ministry of Finance and National Planning.

Attended the ceremony were Dr. Siale ‘Akau’ola, CEO for Ministry of Health, Ms. Liliani Tu’ihalamaka, Deputy Director for Ministry of Education and Training and ‘Aholotu Palu, of the Ministry of Finance and National Planning.

 H.E Mr. Yukio Numata in his key note related to each project and emphasized the significance of the ambulances granted to assist the outer islands hospitals in ‘Eua and Ha’apai, which will aid the emergency service response of the outer islands of Tonga.

He also wished that the flake ice machine for Uiha island will not only serve the people of the Uiha and Felemea village, but will further cultivate the fishery sector of Ha’apai as a whole together with the Ice-machine on Lifuka island,which too have been installed through the GGP.

He expressed his confidence that the project for Tonga College which will extent employment opportunities for students would also further strengthen the close ties between Japan and Tonga College that have been built through the activities of the JICA volunteers and the many students going to Japan to be great rugby players. 

Dr. Siale ‘Akau’ola, CEO for Ministry of Health conveyed the Government of Tonga’s gratitude for the ongoing and significant assistance from the people and Government of Japan, emphasizing the significance of the GGP scheme which uplifts the quality of life of the people from the grassroot level.

The assistance epitomized Japan’s commitment to support efforts by the people and Government of Tonga to ensure Human Security and continue to enrich the existing warm and close relations between the people and the Government of Japan and the people of the Kingdom of Tonga.
