Japan’s Grant Aid for Economic and Social Development Programme Featured

Nuku'alofa, 29 March 2016. The Government of Japan and the Government of the Kingdom of Tonga signed and exchanged notes on “Japan’s Grant Aid for Economic and Social Development Programme,” on March 28.

His Excellency Mr. Yukio Numata, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to the Kingdom of Tonga and Hon. Samuela ‘Akilisi Pohiva, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Tonga and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade signed and exchanged notes at the signing ceremony held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, in Nuku’alofa.

Japan’s Grant Aid total at $200 million Japanese Yen (equivalent to approximately $3.6 million Pa’anga) aims at supporting the efforts of the Kingdom of Tonga to promote economic and social development, through providing foreign currency for import of goods.

Products purchased with this Grant Aid shall be concluded between the Government of Japan and the Government of the Kingdom of Tonga coordinated through a Committee formed with representatives from the Ministry of Finance and National Planning, The Embassy, Procurement Agent and Japan’s International Cooperation System.

The Grant Aid for Economic and Social Development Programme is expected to support the Kingdom to implement the Tonga Strategic Development Framework 2015-2025 as well as demonstrating Japan’s determined commitment to contribute to the betterment of welfare of the People in the Kingdom of Tonga and the achievement of human security.
