Nuku'alofa, 3 February 2016.  His Royal Highness Crown Prince Tupouto’a Ulukalala launched the Thailand Government funded agricultural project at the Royal Estate compound of the Villa near Matakieua yesterday afternoon Tuesday 2nd February 2016.

The project will be a pilot agricultural project aimed at helping develop “sufficiency economy” here in Tonga. A delegation from the Thailand International Cooperation Agency (TICA), led by Deputy Director General Mr Singtong Lapisatepun, is in the Kingdom for the launch.

A statement from the Royal Palace Office said the three year pilot project is to serve as a demonstration for sustainable agriculture development based on sufficiency economy. TICA will fund the project as well as provide experts and training both in Tonga and in Thailand. Sufficiency economy is a Royal initiative in Thailand which was initially set up in the 1970’s under the patronage of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

The technical cooperation and the model project was initiated during the tenure of His Majesty King Tupou VI as ambassador to Thailand and that was followed up by Her Royal Highness Princess Angelika Latufuipeka in 2014 in her capacity as Tonga’s Ambassador to Thailand.

This project is a joint initiative of the Kingdom of Thailand, Palace Office and the Ministry of Agricultural, Fisheries, Food and Forestry.
