Papua New Guinea delegation to visit Tonga

Nuku'alofa 30 January 2016. The Papua New Guinea Minister for National Events, Sports and Tourism, Hon Justin Tkatchenko MP will lead a delegation from the Papua New Guinea Government that will arrive in the Kingdom of Tonga on Saturday 30 January 2016 to assist with the Government of Tonga’s preparation for the Pacific Games 2019.

  The delegation will consist of Senior Government Officials, Engineers and Architects from Papua New Guinea.

This visit is the outcome of the recent visit made by the Hon Prime Minister of Tonga, Samuela ‘Akilisi Pohiva and Government officials to Papua New Guinea earlier this month.  The main purpose of this visit is for the PNG delegation to share Papua New Guinea’s experiences of planning and preparing of a Pacific Games and to continue to dialogue and provide mutual cooperation between the two countries.   Technical experts will assess the sports venues and infrastructure for the sports to determine where Papua New Guinea’s assistance will be targeted.

The Hon Prime Minister of Tonga Hon. Samuela ‘Akilisi Pohiva has stated, “ The Papua New Guinea Government is very happy to assist Tonga and this visit is evidence of their willingness to help Tonga.  This is a very important visit, they will be taken to the proposed sporting venues for the sports which will determine the specific areas where they will assist.”

In Tonga, Hon Tkatchenko and the delegation will meet with the Hon. Prime Minister, the Deputy Prime Minister and other Cabinet Ministers.  The delegation will then visit some of the marked sites for the sports including, Teufaiva Stadium, Sports High Performance Centre, Tonga High School Compound, Vuna Road Areas, ‘Atele Indoor Stadium, Golf Course, Liahona High School and Sia’atoutai Theological College.  The delegation will also have an opportunity to meet with the National Sports Federations in Tonga.

The PNG delegation will depart Tonga for Papua New Guinea on Tuesday 2 February 2016.
