GOVERNMENT OF TONGA
MEDIA RELEASE
(15th July 2015)

Nuku'alofa, 15 July 2015. Tonga’s Prime Minister, Hon. Samuela ‘Akilisi Pohiva, is in Tahiti for the Polynesian Leaders’ Group (PLG) meeting from 15-16 July 2015. The meeting will focus discussions on issues related to climate change and will lay the foundation for a joint strategy furthering a resilient and united Polynesian facing these new challenges.

The PLG meeting will sign a joint declaration at the Marae Taputapuatea site at Bora Bora, that will be referred to the highest level at the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21/CMP11) to the November meeting in Paris, France. The declaration will clearly state the ambitions of the PLG with regard to concrete programmes aimed at climate change adaptation and production of renewable energy.

This is the second meeting of PLG this year that the Prime Minister has attended. The last meeting in Auckland, New Zealand was his first, in February, where Samoa’s Prime Minister, Hon. Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, was appointed Chairperson, taking over from Niue’s Toke Talagi. The focus of the last meeting in Auckland was the management of Fisheries in the Polynesian Pacific.

PLG was started as an initiative of Samoa’s Prime Minister Tuilaepa five years ago. There are 8 leaders from the Polynesian states and territories who are part of PLG. The constant concern of leaders is to place Polynesian man, culture, values, traditions and environment at the heart of debates and stakes in search of a sustainable prosperity for Polynesians.

The Prime Minister left Tonga on Tuesday 14 July, accompanied by Mr. Va’inga Tone, Secretary, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Miss Malia Hola from the Prime Minister’s Office. They are expected in Tonga at the end of the week.
