Prime Minister Hon. Samuela ‘Akilisi Pohiva Attends PALM 7 in TOKYO

Nuku'alofa, 23 May, 2015. Prime Minister Hon. Samuela ‘Akilisi Pohiva and the Tongan delegation attended the PALM Trade and Investment Promotion Forum hosted by Mr. Ishige, Chairman of JETRO, and Mr. Kitano, Chairman of Japan Pacific Islands Association on May 21.

Top Japanese companies with car parts, solar panels, communication systems, and shipping lines – Honda Motor Co Ltd, Hitachi Electric Coy, Japan Radio, ANA Holdings, Mitsui Coy, Omae Co Ltd, Pacific International and Kyowa Shipping Ltd.

Japan Radio highlighted the early warning systems established in Tonga.

Mr. Konoe, President of the International Federation of Red Cross, Red Crescent, and Japan Red Cross, spoke at the opening of the event. He also spoke with the Hon. Prime Minister on the important link of Red Cross with Tonga.

Pacific Festa, an event for promotion of Pacific products accompanied with Pacific cultural dancing was also held. Tonga Vanila of Heilala Vanilla and Tonga Noni Juice of Mr. Kantar Oishi, and Pacific International Coy were displayed at the stalls with beautiful Tongan handicrafts.

H.E. Ms. Tania Tupou, Tonga’s Ambassador to Japan, accompanied the Prime Minister to a luncheon with the Pacific Parliamentarian Friendship League Association hosted by Chairman Furuya. This was a group initiated by former Prime Minister Mori in which Japanese Parliamentarians promote Pacific issues in the Diet of the Parliament of Japan.

The Honourable Prime Minister, together with other Pacific Leaders was invited to the Imperial Palace to meet with Their Majesties, The Emperor and Empress of Japan.

There were forums on the issues of Climate Change and Development in which the Honourable Prime Minister attended. There was also a seminar on Hydrogen Energy. Mr. Leveni ‘Aho, Director of Natural Disasters also attended.

The Japan Minister for Foreign Affair, Mr. Fumio Kishida hosted all the leaders and delegations of the Pacific at a special dinner, in the evening of Thursday 21May.
