Tonga’s Prime Minister attends 10th Pacific Island Conference Leaders (PICL) Meeting

10 September, 2016. The Prime Minister Honourable Samuela ‘Akilisi Pohiva will join Pacific Leaders in Honolulu, from 30 August-1 September, to participate at the 10th Pacific Island Conference of Leaders.

Leaders from twenty Pacific Island countries will convene at the East West Centre to deliberate on the theme, “Enhancing Sustainability in our Pacific Islands: Collective Action for our Shared Future.”

The Conference will discuss key issues of importance to the region’s security, climate change and regional cooperation. The PICL which is held in every three years will strengthen Pacific Islands-US relations and enhance engagements with the US in addressing illegal fishing, maritime security and climate change challenges.

The Hon. Prime Minister Samuela ‘Akilisi Pohiva leads Tonga’s delegation which includes the Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Siaosi Sovaleni, the Chief Secretary and Secretary to Cabinet, Dr. Palenitina Langa’oi and the CEO for Meteorology, Environment, Information, Disaster Management Energy, Climate Change and Communications, Mr. Paula Ma'u.

The PICL will be followed by the Pacific Islands Coalition for West Papua (PICWP) on the 2nd of September, 2016 of which the Hon. Prime Minister of Tonga will also be attending.
