Tongan Students are eligible to enter NZ universities if requirements are met

The Prime Minister and Minister for Education and Training, Hon. `Akilisi Pohiva, has received a letter of reassurance from the Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills and Employment, Hon. Steven Joyce, that Tongan Students will continue to be eligible to access New Zealand`s universities if they meet the entry requirements.

Universities New Zealand collective bodies (UNZ) has confirmed that the universities make their decisions on the basis of whether the minimum requirements and additional specific entry requirements have been met. This is on the basis of how well the student has performed in the Tonga National Form Seven (TNFSC), not on how the TNFSC is marked.

The Hon. Minister for Education and Training was also informed that New Zealand`s NCEA system is standards-based and results are not standardized.

The Hon. Minister for Education and Training wishes to clarify to public that the realignment to the process of Teaching with clear define Curriculum that linked directly to Assessment with clarity in Reporting as feedbacks to inform parents and stakeholders, was done in the best interest of our children and to ensure that they are well prepared for further education abroad.
