Tuku keu tomu'a mai 'e feinga ke tali e fehu'i 'uluaki 'a Sioatu Fakalelei "'Oku totonu nai ke depend e maaka 'o Sionee he maaka 'o Pitaa?".

Ko'eku tali ki heni koe 'IKAI.

'Ikai ngata ai kapau koe 'uhinga e sivi/assessment ke sivi'i e ako ne fai 'ehe tokotaha ako pea 'oku 'ikai ke tonu ke hoko e me'a ne lave kiai 'a Siotau. Hange koia ne 'ohake he toenga he ngaahi fehu'i.

Ka koe ha e 'uhinga 'ene hoko?

'Uhinga he 'oku toe ngaue'aki pe 'ae ola e sivi/assessment ke tanaki tu'unga'i pe rank e tokotaha ako fakatatau ki he ola e sivi/assessment. Koe fo'i tanaki tu'unga ko'eni 'oku 'ikai ko ha 'uhinga fakaako ka koe 'uhinga faka'ekonomika moe fakasosiale. Don't we all want to know who is the captain or dux of a school at the end of the year?

Ki'i fakatataa 'eni. Ola 'eni e sivi ('aia koe Raw Marks mei he 100 total marks) 'a Sione: English (32), Math (90), Physics(92), Chemistry (87), Computer (85). Sivi 'a Pita: English (92), Math (43), History (97), Geography (93), Computer (64). Total marks 'a Sione koe 386 pea ko Pita koe 389.

'Aia ko Pita leva 'oku totonu ke kapiteni pe dux he 'apiako. Kapau te tau liliu e fakataataa ko Pita mo Sione na'ana tohi ki ha sikolasipi tatau pea koe ola e fili 'e 'oange kia Pita he 'oku laka ange 'ene total mark.

But wait a minute, Sione does better than Pita in 2 of subjects they both taken (Math and Conmputer) and Pita does better only in English. But
their other two subjects which they don't take together, Pita does much better.

So the question now: "Is it correct, and fair that Pita should be the dux/captain of the school?" or win the scholarship or win the job interview, et

In addition, how about if Pita only take subjects that deems to be easy (which in reality may not be) or how about if the exam for History and Geography was not that difficult hence not only Pita got good marks there but so as most of all students taking that subject. But for Physics where Sione score 92, the exam was really difficult and most students didn't pass that exam.

So if we think that Pita should be the winner, based on raw marks alone then it is what it is.

If you think otherwise because we can't fairly compare them because they take different subjects and student's performance in each subject is different (different mean and different standard deviation) then we should make it fair then.

But how to make it fair? Standardization had proven the best way so far.

Lastly, remember that Standardization has nothing to do with how much the student had learned but more with the ranking and this ranking is an economic decision because opporunities are rare especially in Tonga.
